BlogI won Theo Paphitis' SBS!
Read on to find out more about Theo Paphitis’ SBS, how you can enter and why this is so mega!
What is #SBS?
SBS stands for Small Business Sunday. It is used as a hashtag on Twitter – #SBS
It was created by Theo Paphitis in October 2010. Theo is best known for appearing on Dragons’ Den on BBC Two. He is Chairman of Ryman Stationery plus Boux Avenue lingerie, Robert Dyas and latest acquisition London Graphic Centre.
Theo is a champion for small businesses. Every week he selects 6 small businesses, from thousands of entries. Some people have been trying for years to be selected!
Theo personally looks through all the tweets he has been sent within the timeframe and chooses his six favourite entries.
His chosen six receive a re-tweet from Theo on the Monday evening at 8pm which is seen by his nearly 500k followers!
I used to be on Twitter more than Facebook, years ago. Then Facebook took over and I found I didn’t have the time to dedicate to different platforms, so I concentrated on the one that was most beneficial to me.
Now with auto posting and the ability to instantly share content from Instagram to Facebook and Twitter, it has made it easier to keep up!
As part of my business goals this year, I’ve been “putting myself out there” more. I have a huge fear of rejection but I am working on overcoming it.
On 16th February I decided to give this #SBS thing a go. I’ve followed Theo for years but never thought I’d be in with a chance of winning. Still, I put my big girl pants on and decided to just go for it. I posted in the Hampshire Women’s Business Group that I’d done my first tweet to Theo and asked for some interaction – I had some likes and comments from it and felt good that I’d been proactive in chasing a dream!
I didn’t get picked on the Monday but didn’t expect to, it was my first time and it was a good exercise in getting everything across while sticking to the 280 character limit – no mean feat!
My next entry was 1st March, I’d forgotton about it the week before so I put a reminder in my phone calendar for each week. I again, had a few likes and comments and went on my merry way.
8th and 16th March was more of the same – Each week I tweeted something different, based on current events or new products. I added a different photo to try to catch his eye, too.
Then came 23rd March. I had a really weird feeling that something good was going to happen this week, I ignored it because it was a really difficult time with so much uncertainty for my business and worrying about my children, health and everything due to the coronavirus. I thought I was just being hopeful, wishing.
I wasn’t going to enter as I just felt so down about everything happening but in the end, I decided I had nothing to lose and wanted to do something positive. I wanted to be honest but upbeat. I don’t know the criteria Theo uses to pick his winners but everything I always put out everywhere is me….honest but sometimes vulnerable, positive but realistic.
Monday evening came and I put my youngest son to bed as usual. I came downstairs and saw My VIP Card had mentioned my Page on Facebook. Anyone with a Facebook Page will know, sometimes it’s difficult to actually see the post from notifications! So I went to the My VIP Card page and found a congratulations…..I was wondering why and then I saw it….my heart actually stopped, I felt 3 million butterflies in my tummy! It was an absoluetly amazing feeling! I went over to Twitter and discovered Theo had tweeted my business to his nearly 500k followers! I couldn’t believe it.
The next few days my Twitter exploded. It was so overwhleming but in a good way! I did take my time in replying to tweets and held off from announcing it anywhere because I wanted to take it all in. Also, with the chidren and partner at home, finding time is a bit difficult! I also felt guilty and didn’t want to be insensitive to anyone struggling with the current situation with lock-down etc.
I was encouraged to post about it and shout it from the rooftops….So with that permission, I did! And the support and beautiful comments have been so lovely. I still can’t quite believe I am now part of the #SBS family and I get to meet Theo next year!
I feel an amazing sense of achivement and so proud of how far I’ve come. Life and business are always full of ups and downs but the highs are awesome and make it all worthwhile.
eSo, how do you enter and hopefully win?
Taken from https://theopaphitissbs.com/about
Each week, Theo rewards small businesses that tweet him @TheoPaphitis and describe their businesses in one tweet including the all-important hashtag #SBS. Only tweets made in the time slot between 5.00 PM and 7.30 PM each Sunday count.
Every Monday night at 8pm, Theo reviews and chooses his favourite lucky six who are then re-tweeted. As he has around 500k followers, this provides a massive boost to the chosen lucky businesses.
The benefits range from increased Twitter followers, to positive media publicity and crucially for many, increased sales! Of course, none of this is guaranteed as it is largely down to perseverance and hard work. A smidgen of luck comes in handy.
I haven’t had any increased sales yet but I only won 5 days ago! We’re in a very weird time, plus I’m not posting anything for another couple of weeks due to social distancing! My Twitter following has massively increased, I’ve had really amazing comments from my supporters on Instagram and Facebook and I just feel like this has given me so much in the way of confidence and positivity.

My tips for Tweeting Theo:
Try to enter each week because regardless of whether you win, huge quantities of Twitter users follow and engage with #sbs and each other, so it’s a great opportunity to showcase your business where thousands of other Twitter users are looking!
- Add the day and time to your calendar with a notification. It’s easy to lose track of the days! – Tweet on a Sunday between 5.00-7.30 PM.
- I mixed it up. Sometimes I replied to his Tweet announcing #SBS was open, other times I tweeted mentioning him and the hashtag #sbs.
- Each week I was honest, open and used the oppotunity to showcase my work through photos.
- Tweet only once per week.
- Interact with other perticipants/businesses. I often wished others Good Luck or retweeted their tweets,
- Congratulate the winners each week when they’re announced. This helps to build your following too.
- Keep going and enjoy it. Think of it as a way to let everyone, not just Theo, know about your amazing business.
Add a link, photo or web address in your tweet.
If you are not chosen, try again next week!
All the rules to enter can be found here.
I wish you much luck! x
